The removal of the “view image” button, enhanced security

In the past, when you performed an image search on Google, the image alone could be displayed on a separate page. You just needed to click the “view image” button and that was it. Google Image allowed users to download the image or drag it to the desktop. Besides being quick and simple, it was very convenient. Unfortunately, that’s part of the past; it’s ancient history now. This situation is due to the removal of the magic “view image” button. A measure that really complicates the theft of images that are protected by copyright. For users, it’s a bit annoying. However, the “Consult” button remains. Thus, they can still view the images, but not download them.

Getty Images’ complaint forced Google’s hand

This removal is part of a larger set of measures from Google. The California giant has signed a licensing agreement with Getty Images. Indeed, this contract allows for better display of copyright information. You will therefore have a clear and precise visibility of this information. Moreover, the signing of the contract also includes the improvement of photo attribution. With this image bank, there will thus be better attribution. Among the reasons that prompted Google to take these resolutions, aside from the security of images protected by copyright, Getty Images’ complaint is one of the main reasons. This complaint from two years ago stipulated a violation of competition law. For this type of dispute, the European Commission is the only competent institution. However, this complaint was withdrawn after the adoption of this measure regarding image search.

Some tips to work around this problem and conduct your image search

This measure is not an obstacle for users eager to steal images from Google. Even though it requires a bit more time, many tricks allow them to overcome this problem. Some sites will not allow you to right-click to save the image you want: they disable it. On others, you may not be able to simply save the image. For such sites, just right-click to open the image in another tab. Besides the disappearance of the “view image” button, there is also the “search by image” button. This button allowed users to select an image in a desired size. It was really convenient. These measures are also advantageous in some ways. Indeed, the visited sites can generate revenue by displaying ads.
